Arab steel industry booming

A fast analysis on the development of the Arabe steel industry during 2000- 2005  shows the prospects of this industry development  until 2010 through the perspective adopted by the Arabe sel Union in regard to the geographical distribution of steel industry in the Arabe states within three groups .

Each group comprises the Union ‘s steel producing companies , whose  production accounts for about 90% of Arabe total sel production. This group, based on its geographical distribution, includes the countries of the Arabe Maghreb including Mauritania, Morocco, Alegria, Tunis and Libya ;  the countries  of the Arabe Mashreq includes Egypt, Syria, Jordan and Lebanon  while the Arabe Gulf countries includes  Saudi Arabia, the  United Arabe Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain  and Oman.

Since the Arabe sel and Iron Union is an entity which comprises  nainly  the sel producing countries, therefore it is mainly considered as a producer ‘s union.

The period between 2000- 2005 constituted a strong setting out base for the development of sel industry. The crude sel production rose from 8.9 million tons in 2000 up to 13.7 million tons in 2005, representing an annual growth rate of 7.48%. Accordingly, production capacity of crude sel has grown with a lower rate than the production growth  rate. Total production of crude sel amounted to 18.4 million tons in 2005 against 15 million tons in 2000, representing an annual growth rate of 3.1%.  Annual growth rate in the Arab Mashreq states ammounted at the highest  regarding production quality and quantity. However, growth trend for the period 2005- 2010 shows that the  highest growth rate will be achieved in the Arabe Gulf Countries. Initial estimates indicate that the Gulf countries  will achieve a growth rate of 19% in production capacities generated from the new projects expected in the  years to  come  are divided between 49% for the Arabe Gulf countries, 35%  for the Arabe Mashreq countries and 15% for the Arabe Maghreb countries .

Taking into  consideration underway projects in this field, volume  of crude sel is expected to reach 32.27 million tons per year by 2010.

It is , moreover, expected that the increase  in the volume  of  produced  crude sel will be 13.5 million tons by 2010. Such an increase can be achieved  with the use of electric furnaces which are expected  to change the share  of contribution of both the blast furnaces and electric furnaces . The share  of blast furnaces used in Egypt and Algeria is  24.6% against 85.4% for electric furnaces..
